This is probably the most common question we get asked. In fact my latest 3 clients have all asked this question in different ways.
- We’re selling the business, how much do I need?
- I enjoy work, but could I afford to walk away?
- I don’t want to finish work any time soon, but when the time is right I want to know we have enough.
This question can in some ways be easy to answer if it’s all about the numbers. But often it isn’t that simple.
At the heart of what we do is a conversation that helps people look into the future and see the possibilities for their own lives. Steve Jobs once said “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life”. So knowing your number is great, but knowing what you want to do with the time you have left is precious.
Because life is not a rehearsal, it’s really valuable to spend time thinking about what’s important to you. There are some great books available to help you in that process. Life Planning for You is the latest book by George Kinder. Through the use of real life stories, George guides you through a life planning process that can help you design your own life plan. It goes on to describe how financial planning, the architecture to make your dream come alive, can be valuable, whether you do it yourself or engage a financial planning professional.
So, when thinking about your retirement planning these are definitely 5 of the big questions, but there are definitely more important questions to think about!
